Originally known as The Village of Harleston. Harleston Village, as it is now known, was originally granted to John Coming and Henry Hughes in the late 1670’s. Eventually the property was inherited by John Harleston, a descendent of Coming. Later, once the property was finally developed in 1770, it was named after Harleston.
The streets here are named after prominent men of the time. Montagu St. was named after The Royal Governor, Lord Charles Greville Montagu. Bull St. was named after Lt. Gov. William Bull. Beaufain St. was named after Hecter Beranger de Beaufain, Collector of Customs and member of His Majesty’s Council. Pitt St. was named for William Pitt, the British member of Parliament who defended Colonial rights. Other notable figures with streets named after them are John Rutledge, Rutledge Ave. and Christopher Gadsden, Gadsden St.. Both Gadsden and Rutledge were active in local government and later leaders in the Revolutionary War.
