South Mount Pleasant

Home in South Mount Pleasant
Home Near Rifle Range Rd.

South Mount Pleasant is considered by many as “Old Mount Pleasant”. Mt. Pleasant was inhabited by the Wando and Sewee Indians years before the first settlers arrived in 1680. This was ten years after Charleston was first settled in 1670. As you discover Mount Pleasant’s deep and storied past you’ll learn to appreciate why the locals are so proud of their low country heritage.

Originally, the area now called Old Village was the first established neighborhood in Mount Pleasant! The oldest home in Old Village is found at 111 Hibben St. which was built in 1755. Upon your first visit to Old Village you’ll discover why this is one of the most sought after addresses in the low country!

Having grown over the years, Mount Pleasant now covers a vast 53+ square miles, consisting of large and small developments, both residential and commercial. With the expansive growth in the area, here you’ll find wonderful restaurants and eateries and lots of great shopping! Most people who gravitate to South Mount Pleasant are attracted to the area because of what it has to offer and it’s prime location in Charleston County! Being close to the beaches on Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms as well as just over the bridge from Downtown Historic Charleston makes South Mt. Pleasant the place to be! Just about anything you’d want or need you can find in South Mount Pleasant.

Getting Around

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge Crossing the Cooper River from Downtown Charleston SC to Mount Pleasant
Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge

One of the first things that you’ll notice about S. Mt. Pleasant is the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. The Ravenel Bridge spans the Cooper River and carries US 17 across the River from Downtown Historic Charleston. Consisting of 8 lanes for cars bikes and pedestrians, the bridge is 13,200 feet long, 575 feet high and has 186 feet of clearance for vessels below. This bridge can handle a lot of traffic!

The Ravenel Bridge is quite an imposing sight for those who see it for the first time. Some say their ears pop due to the elevation when driving over it for the few few trips and others are simply intimidated by its height. But for the locals, it’s just how over 100,000+ vehicles a day get across the river and the large ships reach their ports up river!

Once you come off the bridge into S. Mt. Pleasant, there are two main arteries that take you north through the town. At the bottom of the bridge you can go left and take US 17 which is six lanes of traffic. Or, you can take a slight right and head up Coleman Blvd through the older sections of Mt. Pleasant.

Mathis Ferry Road and US 17 Neighborhoods

While US 17 will take you through the newer business districts, you can also venture north down Mathis Ferry Road, a SC Scenic Highway. Off of Mathis Ferry Road you will find some of the more popular neighborhoods in South Mt. Pleasant like Hobcaw, I’on, Point Pleasant and Wakendaw and Wakendaw Lakes. Additionally, heading north on US 17, you’ll discover a number of small condominiums communities as well as neighborhoods like Creekside Park. Creekside Park was the first large developments built off of this new section US 17 back in the 70’s. This section of US 17 was built to relieve the growing traffic burden at the time on Coleman Blvd. as Mt. Pleasant began to feel its early growing pains.

Coleman Blvd Neighborhoods

If you take the eastern turn to the right at the bottom of the bridge you’ll head up Coleman Blvd. This route will take into the older sections of S. Mt. Pleasant. Here you’ll find the iconic Shem Creek, along with lots of great restaurants, shops businesses and more. The neighborhoods along this section of Coleman Blvd. include, Bay View Acres, The Groves, Cooper Estates, and Old Village. Continuing up Coleman Blvd. the road becomes Ben Sawyer Blvd. and heads over the bridge to Sullivan’s Island.
