North Central is one of the more affordable Downtown Charleston neighborhoods. The neighborhood is bordered on the north by Mount Pleasant Street, the south by Rutledge Ave, the east by Congress St. and on the west by I26 and Meeting Street. The homes here are mostly Freedman Cottages and Craftsman Style Bungalows, built from the 30s to the 50s. Popular with local families, young professionals, students and artists given its location on the Charleston Peninsula.
North Central Tip: Commuters from North Central have an advantage when it comes to traffic patterns and commute time. Since most traffic during morning rush hour is coming in to Charleston, commuting out is easy! And in the afternoon, the bulk of the traffic is flowing out of Charleston. So coming back into town at the end of the day won’t be nearly as bad as commuting from other locations.

Here you’ll find a mix of corner stores to fashionable restaurants like Taco Boy and the Charleston Coffee Roasters. Other favorites include the Rutledge Cab Co., Park Cafe, and Rodney Scott’s BBQ. Additionally, being near Upper King, the vibrant NOMO area make the neighborhood an exciting place to live and play.
Charleston’s North Central is rapidly improving with a large number of homes under renovation and infill projects starting. The neighborhood has been in the focus of investors and developers for several years now. So with that in mind, the deals here are getting harder and harder to find.
North Central is probably one of the more desirable of the affordable neighborhoods on the peninsula. However in recent years the home prices have been pushing up at a steady pace. Having lots of character, here you’ll find plenty of shade trees, sidewalks and corner stores. Near Hampton Park it’s easy to go for a run, bike ride or scenic cruise around the park.
