Wraggborough History

Wraggborough and Mazyckborough like most of Charleston have their own claims to historical significance. Here in Mazyck’s Pasture was the site of the “Liberty Oak” or “Liberty Tree” . The “Liberty Tree” was where the “Son’s of Liberty” met many times prior to the Revolutionary War. Here the “Son’s of Liberty” would discuss their opposition to the policies Great Britain was placing on the colonies. The development of Mazyckborough was planned were surveyed by Joseph Purcell in 1786 for Andrew Mazyck.

The Wraggborough development was a small portion of the extensive land holdings of John Wragg. Wragg named the streets after various members of his family. Still remaining today are Wragg Mall and Wragg Square, which are open areas of “green space” eventually dedicated by his heirs to the public.

The Akin-Rhett House

In the early years of both developments, large homes were constructed for wealthy rice planters. Residents of the time included the Vanderhorst and Toomer families and merchants like William Henry Houston and Robert Martin. Additionally, open for tours is the Akin-Rhett House near Wragg Mall. Owned at one time in the early 1800’s by Governor William Akin.
