The Iconic Rainbow Row
The Iconic Rainbow Row

The French Quarter is a modern era area designation in Charleston in recognition for the city’s French Heritage. The French Quarter extends from the Charleston City Market to Broad St, and from Concord St. to Meeting St.. This location is where records show early French residents established their homes and lives in Charleston during the 18th and 19th centuries. Established in 1973, the designation was an effort to protect “Lodge Alley”. “Lodge Alley” had been slated for the development of condos. A block of endangered buildings not yet named on the National Historic Register as of Charleston’s “Historic” District. Later bought by the Save Charleston Foundation and conveyed to developers who rehabilitated the properties.
