Radcliffeborough was originally developed by Thomas Radcliffe. After Radcliffe’s death, his widow Lucretia continued developing the property. The eight block neighborhood was originally home to wealthy merchants and mechanics from the area. It is also the home to the Church of St. Paul’s, built on land donated by Mrs. Radcliffe. The church was a house of worship for a number of wealthy rice planters that lived uptown.
The first homes built in the area were Plantation Style Homes, Charleston Singles and Cottages. Today the neighborhood is slightly more affordable than other parts of Historic Charleston. A favorite area for students and professors from the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston. Bordered on the west by Morris St., on the north by Saint Phillip St., Calhoun St. on the east and Rutledge Ave on the south.
Radcliffeborough And Cannonborough
To the west of Radcliffeborough, stretching to the Ashley River was another early suburb, Cannonborough. This low mashy area was owned by lumber mill operator “mechanick” David Cannon. Cannonborough was settled by wealthy planters and merchants who built substantial villas in Cannonborough. Today the Charleston Hospital Complex and the Medical College of South Carolina occupy most of old Cannonborough. After the Civil War the low areas of Cannonborough were filled in for the southward expansion of streets. This extension allowed for more development of homes for middle and working class immigrants and freed-men.
Today Radcliffeborough is filled with homes and numerous business venues and is close to the King Street Shopping District. Here you’ll see plenty of pedestrian activity from jogging and walking to skateboarding and biking! In Radcliffeborough, as it is in most of Historic Downtown Charleston, it’s often more convenient to simply leave the car parked!
Homes in Radcliffeborough today offer a variety of historic styles common in Historic Downtown Charleston with probably the broadest price range you’ll find on the peninsula.
