Elliotborough Downtown Charleston

04/08/2020 by billbyrd

Home in Elliotborough

Although the history of Elliotborough is not very well documented. Elliotborough and its neighbor Cannonborough began as separate distinct neighborhoods. Originally Cannonborough was developed by Lumber Mill owner David Cannon. However, most Cannonborough was consumed by the expansion of the Medical College of South Carolina. Elliotborough was named after Colonel Barnard Elliott, a planter, who settled in the area around 1785.

Early residents here were mostly immigrants and migrant workers that worked in the local mills or shipping industry. This was at a time when the city’s economic direction was evolving into a more broad based economy. However some wealthy planters and merchants did build homes in the area. Unlike other neighborhoods in Charleston, is was not home to the famous historical figures of the time. Elliotborough was more a community of a common blue collar Charlestonian.

Elliotborough History

New Elliotborough Development
New Elliotborough Development

Of historical significance in Elliotborough is Line Street. Named after the fortifications built there to protect the city during the War of 1812. Presently however there are no visible remains of the fortifications. Other landmarks include the Charleston Fire Department Station 6. It was constructed in 1885 along with a wide variety of properties, iconic buildings, and churches. The original styles of homes built in the area were Charleston Singles and Freedmen Cottages. Also, a number of apartment buildings were built in the area. Some of which have been recently converted into multifamily dwellings and condos. The Freedman’s Cottages are a very important historical architectural style in Charleston and common in the neighborhood.

Recently there have been several revitalization projects in the neighborhood. These projects have been adding excitement and value to the neighborhood. This fresh energy is bringing new residents to a neighborhood filled with local families and students. The neighborhood has also attracted many different types of investors and homeowners. So whether you’re a first time homebuyer or looking to invest, Elliotborough may just have what you’re looking for!

North Central Downtown Charleston

04/08/2020 by billbyrd

Homes in North Central

North Central is one of the more affordable Downtown Charleston neighborhoods. The neighborhood is bordered on the north by Mount Pleasant Street, the south by Rutledge Ave, the east by Congress St. and on the west by I26 and Meeting Street.  The homes here are mostly Freedman Cottages and Craftsman Style Bungalows, built from the 30s to the 50s. Popular with local families, young professionals, students and artists given its location on the Charleston Peninsula.

Craftsman Style Homes in North Central

North Central Tip: Commuters from North Central have an advantage when it comes to traffic patterns and commute time. Since most traffic during morning rush hour is coming in to Charleston, commuting out is easy! And in the afternoon, the bulk of the traffic is flowing out of Charleston. So coming back into town at the end of the day won’t be nearly as bad as commuting from other locations.

North Central Lifestyle

Park Cafe

Here you’ll find a mix of corner stores to fashionable restaurants like Taco Boy and the Charleston Coffee Roasters. Other favorites include the Rutledge Cab Co., Park Cafe, and Rodney Scott’s BBQ. Additionally, being near Upper King, the vibrant NOMO area make the neighborhood an exciting place to live and play.

Rodney Scotts in North Central
Byrd Property Group at Rodney Scotts

Charleston’s North Central is rapidly improving with a large number of homes under renovation and infill projects starting. The neighborhood has been in the focus of investors and developers for several years now. So with that in mind, the deals here are getting harder and harder to find.

Renovated Cottage In North Central
Renovated Cottage In North Central

North Central is probably one of the more desirable of the affordable neighborhoods on the peninsula. However in recent years the home prices have been pushing up at a steady pace. Having lots of character, here you’ll find plenty of shade trees, sidewalks and corner stores. Near Hampton Park it’s easy to go for a run, bike ride or scenic cruise around the park.

So check out the real estate for sale in the awesome community. And as always reach out if you’d like to schedule a private tour of any home.

Radcliffeborough Downtown Charleston

04/08/2020 by billbyrd

Radcliffborough Home

Radcliffeborough was originally developed by Thomas Radcliffe. After Radcliffe’s death, his widow Lucretia continued developing the property. The eight block neighborhood was originally home to wealthy merchants and mechanics from the area. It is also the home to the Church of St. Paul’s, built on land donated by Mrs. Radcliffe. The church was a house of worship for a number of wealthy rice planters that lived uptown.

John Rutledge House
John Rutledge House

The first homes built in the area were Plantation Style Homes, Charleston Singles and Cottages. Today the neighborhood is slightly more affordable than other parts of Historic Charleston. A favorite area for students and professors from the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston. Bordered on the west by Morris St., on the north by Saint Phillip St., Calhoun St. on the east and Rutledge Ave on the south.

Radcliffeborough And Cannonborough

Home in Radcliffeborough

To the west of Radcliffeborough, stretching to the Ashley River was another early suburb, Cannonborough. This low mashy area was owned by lumber mill operator  “mechanick” David Cannon. Cannonborough was settled by wealthy planters and merchants who built substantial villas in Cannonborough. Today the Charleston Hospital Complex and the Medical College of South Carolina occupy most of old Cannonborough. After the Civil War the low areas of Cannonborough were filled in for the southward expansion of streets. This extension allowed for more development of homes for middle and working class immigrants and freed-men.

Pretty Home In Radcliffeborough

Today Radcliffeborough is filled with homes and numerous business venues and is close to the King Street Shopping District. Here you’ll see plenty of pedestrian activity from jogging and walking to skateboarding and biking! In Radcliffeborough, as it is in most of Historic Downtown Charleston, it’s often more convenient to simply leave the car parked!

Homes in Radcliffeborough today offer a variety of historic styles common in Historic Downtown Charleston with probably the broadest price range you’ll find on the peninsula.

Wraggborough History

Wraggborough and Mazyckborough like most of Charleston have their own claims to historical significance. Here in Mazyck’s Pasture was the site of the “Liberty Oak” or “Liberty Tree” . The “Liberty Tree” was where the “Son’s of Liberty” met many times prior to the Revolutionary War. Here the “Son’s of Liberty” would discuss their opposition to the policies Great Britain was placing on the colonies. The development of Mazyckborough was planned were surveyed by Joseph Purcell in 1786 for Andrew Mazyck.

The Wraggborough development was a small portion of the extensive land holdings of John Wragg. Wragg named the streets after various members of his family. Still remaining today are Wragg Mall and Wragg Square, which are open areas of “green space” eventually dedicated by his heirs to the public.

In the early years of both developments, large homes were constructed for wealthy rice planters. Residents of the time included the Vanderhorst and Toomer families and merchants like William Henry Houston and Robert Martin. Additionally, open for tours is the Akin-Rhett House near Wragg Mall. Owned at one time in the early 1800’s by Governor William Akin.

The Iconic Rainbow Row
The Iconic Rainbow Row

The French Quarter is a modern era area designation in Charleston in recognition for the city’s French Heritage. The French Quarter extends from the Charleston City Market to Broad St, and from Concord St. to Meeting St.. This location is where records show early French residents established their homes and lives in Charleston during the 18th and 19th centuries. Established in 1973, the designation was an effort to protect “Lodge Alley”. “Lodge Alley” had been slated for the development of condos. A block of endangered buildings not yet named on the National Historic Register as of Charleston’s “Historic” District. Later bought by the Save Charleston Foundation and conveyed to developers who rehabilitated the properties.
